The SEAI Solar Electricity Grant reduces the cost of putting solar panels on your home. How much you get depends on your system size. Here is everything you need to know about it.

How much can you claim

Grant by system size.

The grant is €700 per kWp on the first 2 kWp, then €200 per kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800.

How the grant works

From application to payment, in four steps.

    Apply for grant approval

    You apply to SEAI online for grant approval before any work begins. It is free, and SEAI usually responds within two to three weeks.

  2. 2

    Use an SEAI-registered installer

    The work must be carried out by an SEAI-registered installer for the grant to count. McGrath Electrical Solar is registered, No. 50740.

  3. 3

    Get your system installed

    Once your grant is approved, your solar PV system is installed, typically one to two days on site.

  4. 4

    BER assessment and payment

    A BER assessment is carried out after the works, then SEAI pays the grant directly to you, up to €1,800.

SEAI grant questions

How much is the SEAI solar grant?
The SEAI Solar Electricity Grant is €700 per kWp on the first 2 kWp installed (so €1,400 at 2 kWp), plus €200 per kWp up to 4 kWp, capped at €1,800. You receive the full €1,800 once your system is 4 kWp or larger.
Am I eligible?
Your home must have been built and occupied before 2021, and the work must be carried out by an SEAI-registered installer. We are SEAI-registered (No. 50740). A BER assessment is required after the works.
How do I apply for the grant?
You apply to SEAI online for grant approval before any work begins. Approval usually takes two to three weeks and the offer is valid for several months, giving you time to get the installation done. If you are unsure about any of it, ask us and we will talk you through it.
How long does the grant take?
SEAI usually responds to the application within two to three weeks. After your system is installed and inspected, the grant is paid directly to you.
Do I also get paid for exported electricity?
Yes. Under the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG), your electricity supplier pays you for any surplus solar energy you export to the grid, on top of the savings on your own bill.
